Pregnancy Care

  • During later prenatal visits the midwife will:
    • Weigh you.
    • Check your blood pressure.
    • Measure your belly to see how the baby is growing.
    • Check your hands, feet, and face for swelling.
    • Listen for the baby’s heartbeat (after the 12th week of pregnancy).
    • Feel your abdomen to assess the baby’s position (later in pregnancy).
    • Refer for any tests that are needed, such as blood tests or ultrasound.
    • Ask you if you have any questions or concerns. It’s a good idea to write down your questions and bring a list with you so you don’t forget.
    • Prenatal visits last 30-60 minutes, leaving plenty of times to discuss your hopes, expectations, and fears about pregnancy and birth.

  • At your first visit the midwife will:
    • Ask you about your health, your partner’s health, and the health of your close family
    • Identify any medical problems.
    • Figure out your due date: an estimate of the day your baby will be born. Most babies are born within two weeks (before or after) their due date.
    • Make sure you’re taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid.
    • Discuss with you any medications you are taking.
    • Complete physical exam
    • Check your weight.
    • Check your blood pressure.

“Jack weighed in at 8 lbs. 12 oz. and 19 1/2 inches long, he was perfect. I know that I could not have done it without April and Alison; I owe them a debt of gratitude for making my birthing dream come true.”  – Jack’s Mommy
